Hope In The Psalms

I have been praying the Catholic Church’s “Liturgy of the Hours” most days since 1994. The prayers — divided into moments for Morning Prayer, Evening Pray and several other times during the day — are strongly influenced by the Psalms. Usually at least two different Psalms are used during each set of prayers.

It has only been since I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety 10 years ago that those Psalms have truly resonated with me and taken on great meaning.

Try To Find Hope

Thomas Merton wrote, “Hope is to risk frustration.” Then, he urged his readers to take that risk.

It often is difficult to feel hope when in the throes of depression. Even on the good days, there is a fear that rocking the boat even a little will cause the bad days to return. And really, is that something we want to risk?

But hope comes in believing in the possibility of better days.

Find A Companion

One of my key pieces of advice for people who suffer from a mental illness, in particular depression: Find someone who understands and tell them. Find a companion.
